NAME: Striped Bass
OTHER NAMES: Atlantic Striped Bass, Rockfish
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Morone saxatilis
DISTINCT IDENTIFICATION MARKS: The back of the fish often has a dark olive green colour, the siding silvery to white along the belly of the fish. You will find around 7 or 8 dark lines running horizontally along the fish.
SIZE: The striped bass has been recorded at lengths of 1.8 metres. (70.8 inches). A more common size though in Nova Scotia waters is 1 metre (39 inches), but even this size is a good day’s catch. Please remember that if you catch a striped bass below the size of 68cm (26.8 inches) must be returned to the water alive.
MALE OR FEMALE: It’s not always easy to tell which is male or female. If during spawning season though there’s always potential evidence of the female secreting milt.
WATER PREFERENCE: Striped bass spawn in fresh water and then move to salt. They will swim up fresh water rivers on the hunt for smaller fish.
PLACE OF ORIGIN: The striped bass is found most often along the coast of Nova Scotia. According to the department of fisheries and oceans website there are five rivers that the Striped Bass spawn in:
- Miramichi River
- Annapolis River
- Saint John River
- Shubenacadie River
All of these rivers drain into the Bay of Fundy. There is evidence as well that Striped Bass that breed in rivers in the United States visit the Bay of Fundy.
INITIAL ARRIVAL TO NOVA SCOTIA: The striped bass is a fish native to the coastal waters of Nova Scotia
WORLD RECORD: The largest angling record is held by Gregory Myerson. He caught it in Long Island Sound off the coast of Westbrook, Connecticut. It measured in at (54 inches) long, and weighed (81.88lbs)
BEST TIME TO FISH FOR: The best time to begin fishing for striped bass is an hour or two before high tide. This is to catch the bass as they swim in for the bait fish, and shortly after high tide as they head back out to the bay. If you have questions about a specific location though please feel free to ask.
BEST LURES/BAIT TO USE: You can always try using lures, even worms. But many people prefer using things such as eel, squid, mackerel and other types of fish.
TASTE: The steak from a striped bass is strong white meat that can be prepared in many different ways, but is described by most as absolutely delicious.
SEASON FOR FISHING: You can fish for striped bass all year long, but they seem to pick up later in the summer and into the winter.
